Tolerances on Linear Dimensions
There shall be a maximum tolerance of 1/8″ or 3 mm for center-to-center dimension, face-to-face dimension, and location of attachments.
The ASME B31.3 para. 332.2.2 specifies that the difference between the largest and smallest outside diameters at any cross section shall not exceed 8% of the pipe’s nominal diameter for internal pressure. As a result of external pressure, bends shall not be flattened beyond 3% of their nominal diameter. Removal of metal is not permitted to achieve these requirements. In the absence of a definition in the governing code, PFI Standard ES-24 provides guidelines on ovality.
Tolerances on Mitred Joints
A mitred joint is formed by two or more straight sections of pipe matched and joined in a plane bisecting the angle of junction so as to produce a change in direction. The design consideration for miter bends is not required when the offset is 3 deg or less (see Fig. 304.2.3).A mitred joint is formed by two or more straight sections of pipe matched and joined in a plane bisecting the angle of junction so as to produce a change in direction. The design consideration for miter bends is not required when the offset is 3 deg or less (see Fig. 304.2.3).
Tolerance on Flanges
When a pipe flange face is horizontal, its bolt holes straddle the horizontal centerlines (plant north/south), and when the flange face is vertical, it straddles the vertical centerlines. A flange’s rotation is determined by the offset between the elevations of bolt holes on opposite sides of the centerline of the flange. Also, a flange must not tilt more than 2.5mm/m or 1/16″ or 0.8 mm from the square axis across any diameter.
Fabrication Tolerances on Flange
When a field fit-up is required, it is recommended that the plain end of one spool piece be 100-150 millimetres (4-6 inches) longer than the dimension indicated on the piping drawing. Before trimming and beveling the spool provided with cutting allowance, the installation contractor must verify the dimensions in the field. Fabrication contractors provide for these wavelengths in the material take off (cutting allowance). It is not necessary to have any overlengths for field adjustment since the adjacent spool piece has a bevelled end in the shop.

Method of Removing Boiler Tubes
A boiler tube removal is normally accomplished by cutting the tubes at their outer periphery, heating the stub of the tube, notching the forks of the torches, and thereby forcing the tube loose from the boiler vessel. Boiler tube removal may involve cutting off the...
