About 317/317L Stainless Steels

There are several different versions of stainless steel. One of the most popular is stainless steel 317 (SS317), which is a modified version of stainless steel 316. This stainless steel has a higher molybdenum (Mo) addition, which enhances its pitting-corrosion resistance as well as its strength. As compared to stainless steel 316L (SS316L), stainless steel 317L is a low carbon version of stainless steel 317 that provides improved corrosion resistance. As a result of its low carbon content, SS317L can be welded without sensitizing the weld to intergranular corrosion due to precipitation of chromium carbide in grain boundaries. In addition to pulp and paper manufacturing, chemical processing, petrochemical piping, and textile manufacturing, SS317 and SS317L are both widely used in all of these fields.

The ASTM A778 specification includes stainless steel 317l grade as a component of this specification. ASME SA 269 TP 317L pipes are made from stainless steel as are SS ASME SA 249 TP 317L pipes and SS ASME SA 312 TP 317L pipes are made from stainless steel as well. SS welded ASME SA 312 TP 317L pipes, SS welded ASME SA 358 TP 317L pipes can be made from stainless steel as well.
