Key Attributes of 304L and 304H Stainless Steel
The two key grades of 304 stainless steel are 304L stainless steel, which is the low carbon form, and 304H stainless steel, which is the high carbon form. 304L has a maximum of 0.3% carbon and 304H has between 0.04 and 0.1% carbon, making it stronger at higher temperatures.
Even though 304 stainless steel is not a grade that is suitable for use at very high temperatures, it is resistant to oxidization up to 925oC and 870oC when used intermittently. Carbide precipitation and interangular corrosion can occur when 304 stainless steel is exposed to temperatures above 425o C.
Advantages of 304H
For high-temperature applications, 304H stainless offers higher strength at temperatures above about 1000° F (550° C) and up to 1500° F (800° C.)
· Stainless Steel 304H offers good oxidation resistance at 1600°F (870°C) and 1700°F (925°C).
· Sensitizes in the range of 800 – 1600° F (428 – 460° C); thus, 304H is not recommended if aqueous corrosion resistance is required and the product has been welded.
The material should be water quenched or rapidly cooled from the annealing temperature
This grade forms easily and is quite ductile
The strength and hardness of the grade are increased through cold forming
Alloys may become slightly magnetic when cold formed
Carbon content increases the material’s strength at high temperatures
As a result of the higher carbon content, the tensile strength and yield strength are higher
As a result of the higher carbon, the creep strength is greater in the short- and long-term
What’s the difference between 304, 304H and 304L?
The actual content of chromium and nickel in 304 stainless steel is 18% chromium (Cr) and 8% nickel (Ni), but the main difference is carbon.
This stainless steel has a carbon content of less than 0.03%, which prevents intergranular corrosion, and the stress corrosion resistance is theoretically stronger than that of 304, but the effect is not apparent in practical applications. Although the purpose of reducing carbon and adding titanium is the same, the cost of adding titanium is higher, the steel is thicker, and the price is higher.
304 H refers to high temperature, and high carbon content guarantees high temperature strength. GB150 requires austenitic steel to be used at 525 ° C or more, with a carbon content of not less than 0.04%, with carbide as the strengthening phase, especially for high temperature strength. It’s better than pure austenite in strength.
Three stainless steels have a carbon content ranging from 304H to 304L, with the 304 stainless steel having a carbon content between the two. Stainless steel with a high carbon content has poorer corrosion resistance and is easier to rust. The difference in carbon content also affects the price, or the requirements for that sentence.
Low carbon grade 304L and high carbon grade 304H are the two main variants of grade 304.
There is a maximum of 0.30% carbon in 304L, which reduces the tendency for carbide precipitation when welding. Carbide precipitation can cause intergranular corrosion.
The carbon content in 304H is between 0.04 and 0.1%, which makes it more resistant to carbide precipitation at high temperatures.
With 304 having a maximum carbon content of 0.08%, there are potential overlaps in the specifications, so dual specifications are not uncommon.
Because it contains less than 0.08% carbon, 304L can also be referred to as 304/304L.
In the case of steel with a carbon content between 0.04% and 0.08%, it can be described as 304/304H.
Grade 304
The material will hold up well to corrosion, tensile stress, and yield stress. It is also easy to draw and form – your vendor will be able to customize it to meet your needs.
Grade 304L
Mechanical properties are slightly lower than standard 304 – tensile and yield strength are a bit lower.
In other words, anything made of 304L is structurally weaker than anything made of 304.

Industrial Uses
You’ll often find type 304 in mining and water filtration systems and in the dyeing industry. Other chemical-heavy places you’ll see 304 include:
- Heat exchangers
- Chemical containers
- Mining equipment
- Screws, nuts, and bolts in marine components
Engineers also use 304L in saltwater-resistant parts. That said, if you want the most marine-ready stainless steel, use 304L.
Corrosion Resistance of SS 304/304L/304H Forged Fittings
SS 304/304L/304H Forged Fittings have chromium, nickel, and carbon content. As well as the welded and construction properties. With high tensile strength, corrosion resistance, workability, and formability. has excellent corrosion resistance in a wide variety of environments and when in contact with different corrosive media. Pitting and crevice corrosion may occur in chloride-containing environments. Over 60°C, stress corrosion cracks can occur.
Heat Resistance of SS 304/304L/304H Forged Fittings
SS 304/304L/304H Forged Fittings have good resistance to oxidation in intermittent service up to 870°C and in continuous service to 925°C. If corrosion resistance in water is required, 304L is recommended in this case due to its resistance to carbide precipitation. Continuous use at 425-860°C is not recommended if corrosion resistance in water is required.
When high strength is required at temperatures above 500°C and up to 800°C, grade 304H is recommended. It is resistant to aqueous corrosion.
Fabrication of SS 304/304L/304H Forged Fittings
The fabrication of SS 304/304L/304H Forged Fittings should only be performed with tools that are specifically designed for stainless steel materials. In order to prevent cross contamination of stainless steel by easily corroded metals that may discolour the fabricated product, these precautions are necessary.
Cold Working of SS 304/304L/304H Forged Fittings
If cold working is used, an intermediate annealing stage may be necessary to prevent work hardening and prevent tearing or cracking. A full annealing operation should be performed at the completion of fabrication to reduce internal stresses and optimise corrosion resistance.
Hot Working of SS 304/304L/304H Forged Fittings
Forging, for example, involves uniform heating to 1149-1260°C, followed by rapid cooling to ensure maximum corrosion resistance.Forging, for example, involves uniform heating to 1149-1260°C, followed by rapid cooling to ensure maximum corrosion resistance.
