Weld fittings come in a wide variety of shapes (elbows, tees, reducers, crosses, caps, stub ends), materials (carbon, high-yield carbon, low-alloy, stainless, duplex, and nickel alloys), and dimensions (2 to 24 inches in seamless execution, and welded for larger pipe sizes).
For buttweld fittings, the key specifications are ASME B16.9 (carbon and alloy fittings) and MSS-SP 43 (which incorporates ASME B16.9 for stainless steel, duplex, and nickel alloy fittings).
From materials that meet a wide range of requirements, Steel Forgings creates buttweld tees in diameters ranging from 12″ to 48″ and with thicknesses up to 2″. Our high-quality tees connect three pipe sections, with one connector perpendicular to the other two. With smooth internal and external surfaces and minimal impediments thanks to a skillful buttweld, pipe flow is unimpeded.
Designed to prevent internal flattening or distortions that threaten pipeline joint strength, our tees are carefully crafted. Smaller diameter tees may be made of seamless pipe. Larger tees are rolled, welded, and NDE tested on-site. In our capacity as a leading manufacturer of buttweld fittings, we are confident that any buttweld tee you receive will meet the highest quality standards.
The following benefits are associated with butt welding fittings
- allow strong, and leak-proof, piping connections
- minimize pressure drops and turbulence inside the pipeline
- have a long service life
- are rather cheap to purchase and deploy
Generally, socket weld and threaded (forged) fittings are used for piping systems below 2 inches in diameter (ASME B16.11).

Buttweld Elbow 45/90/180 Deg
Buttweld elbows are manufactured to fit ASME B36.10 and ASME B36.19 carbon, alloy, and stainless steel pipes of any size between 2 and 48 inches (and above).
In order to produce buttweld elbows smaller than 24 inches in diameter, seamless steel pipes must be cut, heated, and bent; elbows larger than 24 inches must be welded or made from steel plates.
There are several types of pipe elbows, including:
- reducing elbow: instead of a standard elbow and concentric reducer, a pipe connector with two different bore sizes is used.
- mitered elbow: a large elbow made by joining steel plates
- Equal Tee
Equal tees, also known as straight tees, are buttweld fittings used to branch pipelines at 90 degrees.
Whenever the bore size at the run and branch sides is the same, the tee is defined as equal. An equal tee, therefore, connects two pipes with the same nominal diameter.
Equal tees are available in sizes ranging from half an inch to 48 inches (or larger) and are offered in seamless and welded executions (seamless up to 24 inches, welded above 24 inches).
The buttweld tees are manufactured in accordance with ASME B16.9 (carbon and alloy) and MSS-SP 43 (stainless steel and nickel alloy).
- Reducing Tee
There is a smaller bore size at the branched pipe end of a reducing tee (generally two-thirds smaller).
Whenever a large bore size reduction is required, a reinforced branch connection (such as a Weldolet) should be used to prevent turbulence.
Standard dimensions and tolerances for equal and reducing pipe tees are defined in ASME B16.19 (carbon and alloy steel) and MSS-SP 43 (stainless steel and nickel alloy tees)
- Barred Tee
In pigging operations, barred tees are used (reducing barred tees do not exist, since the pig wouldn’t pass through the reduced area anyway).
A barred tee features a welded restriction on the branch pipe side that prevents the pig from flowing from the run pipe into the branched pipe.
A barred restriction is welded on the internal side of the fitting and resembles a steel cage.
- Buttweld Cross
If a double branch at 90 degrees is required, a butt weld cross-fitting is used.
Pipe cross dimensions and tolerances are defined by ASME B16.9 and MSS SP43. The availability of sizes and schedules for butt weld crosses is not restricted.
In general, this type of pipe reducer is used to modify the bore size of the pipeline by two (maximum three) measures, in order to avoid an excessive pressure drop.
The pipeline bore size may be gradually increased using a sequence of reducers if a larger reduction is required (rather than a drastic change).
Reducer flanges may be an alternative to buttweld reducers for small bore sizes.
- Eccentric Reducer
Eccentric reducers have open ends that are offset.
Eccentric reducers are generally used for horizontal pipelines (whereas concentric reducers are for vertical pipelines or for the inlets of suction pumps, as top flat eccentric reducers).
- Top And Bottom Flat Eccentric Reducer
Eccentric reducers can be top flat (“TF”) or bottom flat (“BF”).
As shown in the image below, the bottom flat eccentric reducer type is used for pipe racks (the bottom of the reducer is flat and is on the same level as the larger run pipes), while the top flat pipe reducer is used at the inlet of pipe suction pumps (this setup prevents the formation of vapor traps in the pipeline).
- Concentric Vs Eccentric Reducer
In a concentric reducer, the inlet is centric whereas the outlet is eccentric, which is perfect for a concentric reducer and offset for an eccentric reducer.
Bw Reducer Manufacturing Process
Cold forming is the most common manufacturing process for seamless eccentric/concentric reducers (welded reducers are produced with the single- or double-seam welding process):
- Receiving inspection
- Heat Treatment
- shot blasting & cleaning
Seamless Vs Welded Bw Fittings
Welded and seamless buttweld fittings are available (seamless for bore sizes under 24 inches, welded for bore sizes above 24 inches).
Since seamless buttweld fittings have no seam welds, they are considered superior to welded BW fittings (welds are always weak points, and susceptible to corrosion).
Welded buttweld fittings have one, two, or more welds, depending on the type of fitting, the dimension, and the manufacturing process used by the mill. Seamless BW fittings are manufactured by cutting, heating, and shaping seamless pipes into desired shapes.
